One other trick you might try, is to bake your finished knives is a toaster oven at 400 F for one hour. The vaunted HC spikes are only high carbon compared to ordinary spikes, weighing in at 0.35. Heat the blade into a red/orange heat and quenching it in either water or oil after that toss it in the oven at around 350-400 for about an hour and let it cool. In this video, we are forging a simple railroad spike knife. You usually don't know exactly how much carbon you have in it, so there may be a little of variation in hardness. I would expect that you could get around 48 RC on A 36. Typically A36 has between 26 and 36 points of carbon. When we were doing a series of tests at Sandia National Laboratories we consistantly achieved 42 to 45 Rockwell C scale on certified 1018 steel.
